Playing Up Policy

Eligibility and assessment requirements for players requesting placement in an older age division.

Players Normally Play in Their Age Division

Bedford Eagles believes players are generally best served by registering and competing within their appropriate age division.

Age divisions are designed to support appropriate physical, social and basketball development while providing players with a pathway alongside others of a similar age.

Playing in an older age division is an exception and is not a parent-selected registration option.

A Playing-Up Request Does Not Guarantee Approval

Meeting the minimum eligibility requirements allows a player to be considered for an older age division.

It does not guarantee approval, placement on a roster, placement on a Competitive (REP) team, or placement at a particular division level.

All playing-up decisions remain subject to Player Classification results, roster capacity, team structure, player safety, coaching resources and Bedford Eagles approval.

U12 Through U18 Eligibility

To be considered for placement in an older age division from U12 through U18, the player must meet at least one of the following experience requirements:

• Have played on a Division 1 or Division 2 Competitive (REP) team during the previous season; or
• Have been selected to a Basketball Nova Scotia provincial team.

Meeting one of these experience requirements does not guarantee approval. The player must also complete the required classification process and meet the ranking standard in the older age division.

Both Classification Processes Are Required

Players requesting to play up must attend Player Classification for both their regular age division and the older age division.

This allows Bedford Eagles to assess:

• Where the player ranks within their proper age division
• Whether the player can compete safely and effectively with older players
• Whether placement in the older division supports appropriate player development
• How the request may affect team formation and roster balance in both age divisions

Playing Up Does Not Create Registration Priority

A player requesting an older age division does not receive priority over an age-eligible player registering in that division.

Age-eligible players will be considered first under the Bedford Eagles Registration Priority Protocol.

Playing-up approval may be limited or declined where approving the request would displace an eligible player, negatively affect roster balance or reduce the viability of the player’s regular age division.

Competitive (REP) Placement

Approval to participate in an older age division does not automatically place a player on a Division 1 or Division 2 Competitive (REP) team.

The player must earn any Competitive (REP) placement through the same Player Classification and team-formation process used for other eligible players in the older age division.

Final Placement Decision

Bedford Eagles will review the classification results and other relevant factors before making a final decision.

The Club may:

• Approve the player for the older age division
• Decline the request and place the player in their regular age division
• Approve the request only if suitable roster space remains
• Reconsider the placement where team formation or roster circumstances change

All playing-up decisions are final and are made in the best interests of player development, safety and viable team formation.

Policy Review

This policy is reviewed annually and may be amended by the Bedford Minor Basketball Association Board of Directors based on program capacity, player development needs and league requirements.
